1781 Ds By Revolutionary War General1 pg. Doc, november 7, 1781, being a revolutionary war pay order for 30 pounds from the state of connecticut to captain ebenezer barnard, jr, signed by major general jedidiah huntington (1743-1818) and fenn wadsworth. The pay order is addressed to john lawrence. Wadsworth was a member of the committee of the pay-table, otherwise known as the connecticut committee of four that handled all of the military finances for the colony of connecticut during the american revolution. The reverse of the document is endorsed by elisha lane (1743-1820), woh apparently received the money on captain barnard's behalf. Jedidiah was the son of jabez huntington, who was a major general of militia from 1776 until his death in 1786. Jedidiah graduated harvard in 1763. He was an active son of liberty, and a member of the committee of correspondence that was established at a norwich in june, 1774. He raised a regiment in which he was made captain and joined the army at cambridge on april 26, 1775. He later aided in repulsing the british at danbury in april, 1776. He was made brigadier-general in may, 1777. He guarded the hudson in 1778. He served in the court-martial that tried general charles lee for misconduct in 1778, and sat on the court that tried british major john andre, who was aiding benedict arnold in his traitorous plan to hand west point over to the british. Andre was hung. He was brevetted major-general at the war's end. Afterwards, he served in various public capacities, including state treasurer (hence his connection to this pay note), and was a delegate ot the convention that adopted the constitution of the u. S. In 1789, after having been sworn in as the first president, washington appointed him collector of customs at new london. Hsi father in law was governor jonathan trumbull.
