Porter usnr of vb-5 from the desk fo and hand signed (blue ink via fountain pen) by adm. Chesetr w. Nimitz usn. This typerwitten document awarded porter with a gold star in lieu of a second air medal for his actions on 07feb44 by sinking an armed merchant ship at the truk atoll and then landing his plane back at the base on one wheel after the landing gear was shot apart by anti aircraft fire.
Legend has it that he landed his plane cigar in mouth as usual and upon stepping out asked calmly anyone got a light. This document is only one of dozens of original usn documents from charles ppo porter's paperwork signed by a famous wwii figure, this particular document is the only one amongst them signed by nimitz. Porter usn flew sbd dauntless bombers in wwii with vb-5, later served as a navy jet test pilot and then flew missions over korea in f-9f's with va-144 as xo. He was unfortunately killed during a routine training flight in an a3d skywarrior over washington state on march 27, 1960. Porter was the commanding officer of vah-2 stationed at nsa whidbey island where there is now a street named in his honor. I have been given the honor, and distinct pleasure, to bring to yuo the lion's share of his remaining military gear, paperwork, photographs and other personal effects covering his career from pre wwii through korea, his test pilot years and his years as a co with vah-2 here on e-bay over the next few weeks.
